River dam near North Dakota city of 1,200 at risk of failure

BISMARCK, N.D. >>Authorities have advised about 200 people who live near the Des Lacs (duh-LAKS’) river in northwest North Dakota to evacuate their homes because a dam might fail.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for the area. Meteorologist Ken Simosko tells KCJB radio that there’s a “moderate to high risk” that the dam near Burlington will fail within the next 24 hours.

Assistant Police Chief Bill Hunt tells The Associated Press he doesn’t think any of the residents in the affected area on the west edge of the city of about 1,200 people have left their homes. He says officials used a boat to rescue one person whose home was surrounded by floodwaters.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple and other state officials are traveling to the city Wednesday.
