Board of Ed committee to discuss possible school closures today
A Board of Education committee will discuss proposals this afternoon to close three small elementary schools in May.
Being eyed for closure are Queen Liliuokalani Elementary in Kaimuki and two Kalihi elementary schools, Kalihi and Puuhale.
State schools Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi has supported closing the schools, a move that would save as much as $2 million a year.
But dozens of parents, teachers and community members are expected to come out to oppose the closures.
The Board of Education administrative services committee meeting will begin at 3 p.m. in room 404 at the Queen Liliuokalani Building, 1390 Miller St.
If the committee approves the proposals, the issue will go to the full board for a final vote.
