Firefighters placed a boom around a storm drain on Ala Wai Boulevard leading into the canal to contain what appeared to be “a light oil sheen” from spreading into the canal.

Firefighters were summoned to the storm drain at Ala Wai Boulevard and Kanekapolei Street, across the canal from the Ala Wai Golf Course, just before 9 this morning.

After laying down a boom to absorb the oil, the firefighters turned the matter over to the state Health Department, the Coast Guard and the city Emergency Management Department.

The Coast Guard said it was monitoring the situation.
