The city has resumed some pickup of bulky trash items, such as sofas and mattresses, from curbsides in some areas of Oahu, as some waste disposal service resumed on the weekend after the re-opening of storm-damaged Waimanalo Gulch landfill.

Nineteen truckloads of bulky items were picked up in some “hot spots” of Oahu over the weekend, although the scheduled date for resumption of bulky item pickup is tomorrow, the city Department of Environmental Services said.

Department spokesman Markus Owens said the city has been targeting critical hot spots, including Waikiki, where people have left unauthorized items on the sidewalk.

Other areas where bulky items have been picked up include Halawa, Punchbowl, McCully, Moiliili, Makiki and Waipahu.

A partial re-opening of the Waimanalo Gulch landfill began Friday, with the city accepting sewage sludge from various wastewater treatment plants.
