Police are looking for witnesses to two arson fires that destroyed two shark tour boats within a month on Oahu’s North Shore.

"Currently we don’t have any witnesses; we’re trying to locate any witnesses that could help us," said Honolulu police Lt. Lisa Mann. "The fires appear to be lit in the same manner."

On Monday, a fire started aboard a North Shore Shark Adventures boat at 12:11 a.m., heavily damaging the vessel. On Jan. 7, another vessel owned by the company caught fire about 12:40 a.m. and was destroyed. Both blazes caused about $225,000 in damages.

The company is one of two shark tour companies that operate out of Haleiwa Harbor. 

She said detectives haven’t confirmed what was used to set the fire and declined to comment on what police were doing in the investigation. 

It’s also not clear if the fire bug acted alone or was working with others, she said. Detectives haven’t confirmed a motive.

Mann said arson fires haven’t increased recently, and the boat fires do not appear linked to a handful of intentionally set brush fires that burned near H-2 last October, but didn’t cause any serious damage.
