No. 6 Farrington takes it to Kahuku

The senior poured in five 3-point shots in the first half as No. 6 Farrington outran No. 10 Kahuku 66-55 before 300 fans at Richard Kitamura Memorial Fieldhouse.
Farrington (15-9) remained unbeaten in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference double-elimination girls basketball tournament. The Governors will rest up while the teams with one loss — Kaimuki, Kapolei and Kahuku — battle for a shot at the title.
Farrington will meet one of those teams next Thursday at Mililani’s gym, but is in the driver’s seat. The only way the Govs won’t win the OIA Red title is by losing twice.
"They knew what was at stake," coach Caroline Tatupu said. "We could win three games and be in the championship (game), or lose and have to play six or seven through the back route."
Tatupu-Leopoldo, a 5-foot-9 guard, looked for the kill early against a Kahuku zone that couldn’t track her down fast enough.

"When she got hot like that, we had to change," Kahuku coach David Te’o said. "She was shooting from out of range."
"She had the hot hand," Tatupu said. "So naturally we tried to keep feeding her."
The break afforded by the win is a plus for the Govs.
"The rest is good. We need the practice," said Tatupu-Leopoldo, who had ice bags on both knees.
Kirsten Liana (nine points, 13 rebounds, five assists) had ice on her sprained ankle.
Tatupu-Leopoldo opened the game with a 15-foot banker, then drilled a trey from the left corner. After Kahuku’s first five-for-five platoon substitution midway through the opening quarter, Tatupu-Leopoldo arched in another 3-pointer, and then another from the left corner.
She had 11 points by the end of the quarter, but Kahuku was in it at 18-all, thanks to 10 points by post Joshlyn Noga.
From that point on, however, Farrington locked down Noga, who finished with 14 points and attempted just four shots in the final three quarters.
Liana’s ballhandling skills were a major asset against Kahuku’s fullcourt press.
Kahuku stayed close and took a 24-23 lead after consecutive buckets by Allyson Te’o, but the home team went on a 13-5 run to close the half.
Tatupu-Leopoldo hit her fourth bomb, then delivered a fast-break dish to Liana to spark the run. After Tatupu-Leopoldo hit a 23-foot trey from the top and two foul shots in the last minute, Farrington took a 37-28 lead into the locker room.
"Usually, we dribble too much," Tatupu-Leopoldo said of Kahuku’s defensive pressure. "This time, we were looking up more."
Still platooning in the second half, the Raiders got within 38-32, but the Govs answered with an 11-1 run to close the third quarter. Liana went coast-to-coast for a bucket off a rebound, and Ashley Savusa’s 3-pointer rattled in for a 47-33 lead. After Tatupu-Leopoldo scored on the break on a feed from Liana, the Govs led by 16 entering the final quarter.
With Farrington applying fullcourt man-to-man pressure, Kahuku got no closer than 12 the rest of the way as its five-game win streak came to an end. The Raiders (7-11), who already sealed a berth in the state tournament, will play today’s Kaimuki-Kapolei winner on Tuesday in an elimination game.
