Vietnamese blogger released on bail

HANOI, Vietnam » Vietnamese state media say police have released on bail a blogger accused of branding the son of a senior security official as a womanizer.

Friday’s Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper quoted Maj. Gen. Cao Minh Nhan, deputy national criminal police chief, as saying Le Nguyen Huong Tra was released because her crime has been clarified and there was no need for further detainment.

She was taken into police custody in October. It’s unclear when Tra, who blogged as "Do Long Girl," will be put on trial.

The charge of "abuse of democratic freedoms to infringe on the interests of other people" carries a penalty of up to three years in jail.

Human rights groups have criticized Vietnam for jailing people for peacefully expressing their opinions. Hanoi maintains only lawbreakers are punished.
