Landfill will remain closed into next week

Waimanalo Gulch Landfill will remain closed until Jan. 27 and bulky items with the exception of metal appliances will not be picked up curbside by city refuse crews.

Residents are asked to hold onto bulky items (including carpets, chairs, sofas, mattresses, box springs, toilets and home renovation debris) and not put them out until further notice.

The only bulky items that will be collected are refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, water heaters, and ranges.

The city said that Waste Management of Hawaii, the operator of the landfill, has assessed its cell liner and determined it will require repairs before it is able to safely accept waste again.

Heavy rain last week caused a runoff of stormwater and significant discharge of debris, including medical waste, from the landfill, which has been closed since.
