Police are conducting twice-daily patrols around Manoa Elementary School, and parents and teachers are taking extra care after a possible attempted abduction.

School administrators say the incident happened shortly after school Monday when a girl was walking to her grandfather’s car near Manoa Valley District Park behind the campus.

Police say a man standing next to a black Honda sedan called the girl over and "began talking to her." She then ran to her grandfather’s car.

The girl’s father reported the incident the next day.

As a precaution, police are conducting patrols near the school in the mornings and afternoons. School staff are also standing along the perimeters of the campus after school lets out to watch for suspicious people.

Jeanette Uyeda, school principal, said the incident has shaken parents and staff, but added the steps the school has taken are being done in an abundance of caution.

"There hasn’t been any panic," she said.

Counselors have also visited classes to go over safety tips.

About 570 kids attend Manoa Elementary.
