SAN DIEGO — A 33-year-old record may have been shattered, with the catch of a 405-pound yellowfin tuna in Mexico.

Mike Livingston caught the tuna Nov. 30 while on a 10-day fishing excursion on a San Diego-based sport boat. He weighed the fish in Monday at Point Loma Sportfishing.

Livingston told the San Diego Union-Tribune it was "fish of a lifetime."

Livingston’s previous big fish was a 100-pound yellowfin.

The International Game Fish Association must approve the application for the record. Because it was caught in Mexico, the organization’s records coordinator says it will take at least 90 days to approve it as a record.

The previous record was a 388-pound, 12-ounce yellowfin caught in 1977.
