Public meetings to focus on new plastic bag ban
Meetings on Kauai through the next two weeks will discuss a plastic bag ban taking effect Jan. 11.
Public information meetings will be held on Kauai within the next two weeks to discuss the upcoming plastic bag ban.
The ban, to take effect Jan. 11, requires all retail establishments to provide recyclable paper bags or biodegradable or reusable bags to their customers.
Meetings will be held between 10 and 11 a.m. at the Lihue Civic Center, Moikeha Building, in Meeting Room 2 this Monday and Nov. 4 and 8.
On Nov. 9, meetings will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, 4480 Papalina Road, and from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Kapaa Neighborhood Center, 4491 Kou St.
Retailers unable to attend are asked to contact the county recycling office.
The County Council adopted the new law in October 2009 to reduce harm to the environment and marine life.

Maui County passed in 2008 a similar plastic bag ban, which also will take effect in January.
To request support or extra help at the meetings, call Allison Fraley of the Solid Waste Division at 241-4837 at least three business days before the meeting.
