Firefighters had a busy noon hour yesterday, battling two blazes on commercial properties in Waipahu and Pearl City.

The first fire destroyed six cars at Tows R Us, a salvaging and recycling company on Leonui Street in Waipahu. Tires, car parts and possibly other items were destroyed, said Honolulu fire Capt. Earle Kealoha.

Employees were removing gasoline and other fluids from vehicles when the fire began, although the cause of the fire is still being investigated, he said. There were no injuries.

The call came in at 11:57 a.m., and the fire was under control by 12:23 p.m., Kealoha said.

Daniel Han of neighboring Hans Metals said he saw flames shooting from the property behind his business.

The second fire occurred in an abandoned, two-story building on a lot along Kamehameha Highway in Pearl City, on the west side of the HomeWorld outlet, Kealoha said.

The fire was confined to an 800-square-foot room on the first floor of the two-story building, which had been used by Stoneridge Towing until several months ago, he said.

That fire was reported at about 12:25 p.m. and extinguished at 1:26 p.m. Several lanes of Kamehameha Highway were shut down as firefighters fought the blaze.

A fire investigator was searching for the cause of that fire, Kealoha said. The room was filled with bedding and other household items that indicated homeless individuals may have been living there, he said.

Damage estimates have not been determined in either case.
