The public is invited to attend Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) celebrations Friday and next Saturday at Temple Emanu-El and Chabad of Hawaii.

Jews around the world began celebrating Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year on Wednesday, and more High Holidays are in the coming week.

Temple Emanu-El, Hawaii’s Reform congregation at 2550 Pali Highway, will begin a service promptly at 6:15 p.m. Friday. Daylong Yom Kippur Day services will continue next Saturday, starting at 9:30 a.m. and concluding with a break-the-fast meal in the synagogue’s courtyard.

Nonmembers who wish to attend Temple Emanu-El’s services are asked to donate $125, though no one will be turned away. College students associated with the Hillel Movement and enlisted military personnel may attend all services free of charge.

At Chabad of Hawaii, Yom Kippur starts Friday with candle-lighting at 6:13 p.m., the fast at 6:27 p.m., and Kol Nidrei service at 6:30 p.m. at the second floor of Ala Moana Hotel.

Next Saturday’s services begin at 10 a.m. Yizkor prayer is at 1 p.m., Minchah service at 5 p.m. and Neilah (closing) service at 5:45 p.m. The fast ends at 7:03 p.m., followed by a break-the-fast meal at 7:15 p.m. For information on cost, call 735-8161 or e-mail chabadhawaii@daol.com.
