2 rescued after car flips on freeway

Honolulu Fire Department rescue personnel yesterday helped free two people trapped in an overturned vehicle near the Kamehameha Highway underpass in Waipahu.

The incident, which happened about 1 p.m., clogged traffic on the H-1 and H-2 freeways through midafternoon.

HFD spokesman Capt. Earle Kealoha said the two occupants were not "pinned" in the overturned vehicle, but could not open the doors to exit. They were transferred to the care of Emergency Medical Services personnel. Their condition was not immediately known.

Man hit while walking on roadway

A 23-year-old man was critically injured yesterday when he was hit by a car while walking in the opposite direction on Farrington Highway in Waianae.

Police said the man was intoxicated and walking south in a northbound lane when he was hit south of Pohakunui Avenue by a four-door Mazda about 3:20 a.m.

The 23-year-old man driving the vehicle and a female passenger were not injured. The pedestrian, of an unknown address, was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center with head and other injuries, police said. Poor lighting may have been a factor in the crash, police said.

Suspect arrested in girl’s sex assault

Police have arrested a 21-year-old Kaneohe man who allegedly broke into a 16-year-old girl’s Kailua home and sexually assaulted her about two weeks ago.

The girl said the man assaulted her after entering her home without permission about 1 a.m. Aug. 12.

Police arrested the man Thursday in Kailua on suspicion of first-degree burglary and second-degree sexual assault. He was released pending investigation.

1 caught, 2 sought in man’s beating

Police arrested a 16-year-old girl and are looking for two other suspects who allegedly beat up a homeless man in Makiki.

Police said that about 3:40 a.m. last Sunday, on South King Street between Piikoi and Pensacola streets, the suspects punched and kicked the 47-year-old man. Police said the man was injured, but did not need to be hospitalized.

Police said the girl was arrested Friday on suspicion of second-degree assault. She was released pending investigation. Two other suspects, a 16-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man, have been identified but not arrested.

2-acre Kalaeloa fire might be arson

Firefighters said a 2-acre brush fire Friday in Kalaeloa may have been intentionally set.

The fire began shortly after 2 p.m. in an undeveloped area off Coral Sea Road, near Coast Guard Station Barbers Point, said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig. State and city firefighters put out the blaze by 4 p.m., he said. He asked that anyone with information about the fire to call police.

Kona man charged with endangering

A 30-year-old Kailua-Kona man was charged with first degree terroristic threatening and reckless endangerment.

Police said Dustin Kaneta-Ogata fired a shotgun from the balcony of his apartment after getting into a fight with his neighbors Monday evening.

Police arrested him at about 7 p.m. Monday and seized his shotgun. He was charged Wednesday afternoon.

Kaneta-Ogata was being held at the Kona police station in lieu of $4,000 bail.
