Mililani powers past hamstrung Kaimuki

JAMM AQUINO / JAQUINO@STARADVERTISER.COM
Mililani’s Hassan Richardson soared for extra yardage last night.

The numbers game caught up to Kaimuki.

Mililani scored 21 unanswered points against the Bulldogs — who had only 20 available players — to pull away for a 34-6 victory last night in the season opener for both teams at John Kauinana Stadium.

"Hats off to the Bulldogs, they really battled," Mililani coach Rod York said. "They gave us a close game there in the half and if they had 40, 50 guys instead of 25, it would have been a different game."

Trojans quarterback Trent McKinney threw a 51-yard touchdown pass and ran for a 34-yard score in less than three quarters of work.

The game was a rematch of a first-round OIA playoff game last year, which Mililani won 47-35.

Kaimuki running back Chester Sua, a Washington State commit, was held to 62 yards on 11 carries.

Mililani jumped out to a 13-0 lead, scoring touchdowns on its first two drives. McKinney found 6-foot-4 receiver Hassan Richardson for a 51-yard score on an opening drive in which it threw the ball every play.

The Trojans changed it up the second time out, establishing Zachary Payomo on the ground. Payomo rumbled for a gain of 18 yards as Mililani needed just six plays to put the ball in the end zone on Payomo’s 2-yard run.

"They started out giving us an 8-yard cushion, so we threw it," York said. "Then when they adjusted, we switched it up on them and honestly, since they only had eight available linemen, we should have been able to pound the ball on them more."

Kaimuki answered with a much-needed score as Sua and Siaosi Hala’api’api doubled up on Mililani’s run defense. The two combined for six carries on the drive. At the perfect time, quarterback Dallas Reis made his only pass of the drive count, hitting Mason Kuali’i Moe for a 30-yard touchdown strike.

Mililani put the game out of reach with three touchdowns in a 4-minute span in the third quarter. Both teams piled up more than 100 yards in penalties, combining for 26 total infractions.

"We were kind of sloppy, definitely too many penalties," said McKinney, who finished 8-for-13 for 142 yards. "It was a good test to start out against a good team."
