Male sought in robbery, mace attack

Police are looking for a male who robbed three boys at knifepoint and sprayed them with mace at a playground early yesterday in Waialae-Kahala.

The boys, two 13 and one 14, were loitering at Wilson Community Park at about 1:35 a.m. when the suspect approached with a knife, demanding their property, police said. The suspect, who appeared to be between 15 and 18, took one boy’s backpack. As he walked away, two of the victims asked for the backpack, and the suspect sprayed them with mace and left.

Suspect held in Chinatown stabbing

A 46-year-old Kalihi man has been charged in a stabbing in Chinatown.

An Van Nguyen was being held yesterday in lieu of $1,000 bail for third-degree assault. Police said Nguyen was arguing with a 36-year-old man when he stabbed the victim in the head with a pocketknife at about 1:15 a.m. Wednesday near Kekaulike Mall.

Big Island fugitive arrested at home

A fugitive was arrested yesterday in Puna following a tip to CrimeStoppers.

Kau patrol officers and Hilo vice officers arrested Will M. Kaaihue at his home in the Green Sands subdivision. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault, two counts of abuse of a family/household member, violating parole and contempt of court, police said.

Imprisoned schoolteacher gets more time

A former Big Island schoolteacher, already serving a five-year federal prison term, was sentenced by a state court to another 10 years on a drug charge to which she had pleaded guilty.

Big Island Circuit Judge Glenn Hara on Wednesday sentenced Lynn M. Dionise, 53, a former special-education teacher at Keaukaha Elementary School, to serve 10 years following her release from a California federal prison in May 2014.

"I think consecutive sentencing was appropriate sentencing given her involvement in drug dealing," said Deputy Prosecutor Jason Skier.

Dionise was found to be in possession of one-eighth of an ounce of methamphetamine in her Keaukaha apartment, along with $13,245, and was arrested April 29, 2008, Skier said.

In the federal case, she pleaded guilty to the importation of methamphetamine, and was convicted of engaging in conspiracy to distribute more than 50 grams of methamphetamine.

Ethics panel clears mayor in food flap

HILO » The Hawaii County Board of Ethics is dismissing a complaint that Mayor Billy Kenoi and his top planner failed to report meals worth more than $100 provided by developers.

The three-member board unanimously voted Wednesday to dismiss the case after Deputy Corporation Counsel Brandon Gonzalez told the board that Kenoi did not believe his meal was worth more than $100.

After Planning Director Bobby Jean Leithead-Todd and Kenoi dined with a group of Singaporean investors at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel last fall, she estimated her share of the dinner cost at least $100. She said Wednesday that number was not accurate.
