UH band aspires to musical role on ‘Five-0’
The theme that made McGarrett famous is back with a fresh arrangement for the fall reboot of "Hawaii Five-0," and the college band that has played the original tune at every home game since the 1970s hopes to find itself performing in front of CBS cameras.
The network unveiled its "Five-0" theme yesterday at Comic-Con 2010 in San Diego during a panel discussion featuring series stars Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park.
Fans of the show will recognize the sound, which is close to the original version written for the show in 1968 by Morton Stevens. The new version was recorded last month. Composer Brian Tyler conducted 35 musicians, including some who worked on the original series, at the session in Burbank, Calif.

"We’re treating the ‘Hawaii Five-0’ theme as a lead character in the show, and we’ll make use of the song in a variety of ways as we launch the new series," said George Schweitzer, president of CBS Marketing Group, in a statement.

Some of the hype might involve the University of Hawaii band. CBS officials have had preliminary talks with band officials, who consider the theme to be the school’s unofficial fight song, said assistant band director Gwen Nakamura.
"Nothing is firm yet," she said. "They might come film something."
She isn’t sure where footage of the band would end up. "I can’t even surmise, but maybe even on the opening credits," she said. "It would be supergreat not only for us, but for everyone."
Keith Higaki, UH associate director of bands, said he liked the sound of the new arrangement — and with good reason.
"It sounds really good, and it sounds really close to the arrangement of the one we play at our football games," he said. "I am excited."
