Boy who fell off golf cart identified

The boy who died after falling out of a stolen golf cart Monday afternoon has been identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office as Roland Javier, 17, of Ewa Beach.

Javier was the passenger in the golf cart driven by a 16-year-old boy that ran into trouble as it headed down Nahiolea Street toward Hulumanu Street in Halawa Heights. Police traffic investigators said the driver had problems with the brakes and that the passenger jumped or fell from the cart.

Javier sustained injuries to his head, arms, legs and torso. He was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:57 p.m.

The golf cart had been stolen from Pearl Country Club over the weekend, a country club employee said.

The 16-year-old driver, of Aiea, was arrested a short time after the accident and was under investigation for negligent homicide and unauthorized control of a vehicle.

Javier’s death was the 33rd traffic fatality of the year on Oahu. There were 31 traffic deaths at this time in 2009.

Knife-point robbery suspect arrested

Big Island police yesterday arrested a Honaunau teenager in connection with the knife-point robbery of two tourists at a coffee processing company in Kealakekua on June 11.

The 17-year-old boy was arrested in Honokaa on suspicion of first-degree robbery and second-degree attempted robbery for allegedly robbing a 63-year-old Tennessee man and his 58-year-old wife, police said. He also was arrested for allegedly stealing a red Honda Civic used to flee the scene of the robbery.

Detectives were looking for a second suspect.

The boy was being held at the Kona police station pending his transfer to the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility on Oahu for failing to comply with terms of Drug Court.

Stranded Jet Ski rider rescued

A Jet Ski rider was rescued off Oahu’s southeast shore yesterday morning after taking on water during a trip to Molokai.

Lifeguards were assisted by Coast Guard and Honolulu firefighters in the rescue operation about three-quarters of a mile offshore of Alan Davis Beach and Makapuu Lighthouse about 10 a.m. yesterday.

The Jet Ski rider, who was not injured, was towed ashore near Makai Pier, said Ralph Goto, city water safety administrator.
