Five new fire trucks were dedicated by the Honolulu Fire Department at its South Street headquarters today – three pumpers and two quints.

The new pumpers will replace older trucks in Kapolei, Makakilo and Waiau. They feature a compressed air foam system that allows water to more easily penetrate burning materials and extinguish fires more quickly.

The two quints will go to the Waipahu and Waianae stations. They have 2,000-gallon-a-minute pumps and 3-section aerial ladders that can go as high as 75 feet vertically and 69 feet horizontally.

The department also dedicated five sport utility vehicles that will be used by assistant and battalion chiefs.

The pumpers cost $583,734 each while the quints cost $814,000 each. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant contributed $700,000 to the purchase of one of the quints. The SUVs cost $46,678 each.
