Kauai county workers contained a 1,000 gallon sewage spill last night at the Eleele Shopping Center in Kauai, a county spokeswoman said. 

At about 7:30 p.m., police received a report of the spill that occurred near the center’s Waialo Road entrance. 

Public Works Department workers arrived 15 minutes later. The spill was contained by 9:30 p.m. and workers cleaned and disinfected the area . 

The sewage spill was a result of a manhole that overflowed due to a possible plugged sewer main, according to a news release.
