War’s impact on isle soldiers is topic

The impact of war on Hawaii’s soldiers and families will be discussed at a public seminar sponsored by Mental Health America of Hawaii from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today at Central Union Church.

Speaking at the brown-bag event will be University of Hawaii psychiatry professor Dr. William Haning, a former officer with Marine Forces Central Command in Iraq, Family Court Judge Michael Broderick and Leigh Chin, a mother, daughter and sister of veterans.

Work closes stretch of H-1 at night

The two town-bound right lanes on the H-1 freeway from the Makakilo Interchange to the Kualakai Parkway will be closed nightly from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. for about two weeks for retrofit work, the Department of Transportation said. The closure started last night.

All on-ramps and offramps will still be open.

However, the Makakilo/Kapolei/Kalaeloa offramp on the H-1 freeway in the town-bound direction remains closed until work is finished on Phase I of the new Kapolei Interchange Complex, the Transportation Department said. Motorists may use Campbell Industrial Park/Barbers Point Harbor offramp (Exit 1A) to Kapolei Parkway and Kamokila Boulevard as an alternative route.

Meanwhile, the state Department of Transportation is closing lanes on Kamehameha Highway at night this week.

The right lane in the westbound direction on Kamehameha Highway between Pali Momi Street and Kanuku Street near the Kaonohi Street intersection will be closed from 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to 3 p.m. Thursday for roadwork.

Another right lane closure will be in the town-bound direction between Kanuku Street and Lipoa Place in front of HomeWorld from 8:30 a.m. Thursday to 3 p.m. Friday.

The bus stops in these areas will still be functioning, but moved slightly during the work periods. Motorists may use alternate routes such a Moanalua Road or the H-1 freeway.
