SOUTH BEND, Ind. » A two-time All-American at UCLA, Stephanie Kono will face an opponent with similar credentials in today’s second round of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship.

Kono was among three golfers with Hawaii ties who won their first-round matches yesterday at The Warren Course at Notre Dame. Former Big Island resident Kimberly Kim and Lihue’s Kelli Oride also advanced to the round of 32. Punahou seventh grader Allisen Corpuz was eliminated in the opening round.

The second and third rounds are scheduled for today, cutting the field to eight for tomorrow’s quarterfinal round.

Kono, named a first-team All-American by GolfWeek and the National Golf Coaches Association following her sophomore season, will face Candace Schepperle – a first-team All-American last year and an honorable mention pick at Auburn this spring – in a second-round match today.

Kono advanced by holding off Seohee Moon of Washington 1-up yesterday in the final match of the opening round. Kono built a 3-up lead through 11 holes but was just 1 up after bogeys on No. 14 and 15. She matched Moon with pars over the last three holes to advance.

A birdie-birdie finish by Oride against Shamira Marshall sent the Kauai senior into the second round to face Auburn All-American Cydney Clanton, who played with Kono and Kim on the U.S. Curtis Cup team earlier this month.

Oride was 2 up after 12 holes before back-to-back bogeys tied the match. Oride bounced back to birdie the par-4 16th and par-5 17th and win the match 2 and 1.

Kim, twice the tournament’s runner-up and the 13th seed in the bracket, defeated Simone Hoey of Long Beach, Calif., 4 and 3, and faces Gyeol Park of Korea today.

Kim took the lead when Hoey bogeyed the first two holes and built a 4-up lead through seven.

Corpuz was four down to Anna Kim of Canada through 10 holes. She won the next two, but would get no closer and Kim advanced 2 and 1.

The quarterfinals and semifinals are set for tomorrow with the 36-hole championship match Saturday.
