A 25-foot sailboat ran aground today off Iroquois Point after the boaters lost control while returning from sea.

Honolulu firefighters received a call about 2:30 p.m. about a foundering sailboat about 150 yards off shore near Edgewater Drive, said Honolulu Fire Capt. Kevin Mokulehua.

Three fire companies responded and firefighters reached the boat on personal watercraft and surfboards, Mokulehua said. Four men and one boy were on the vessel and firefighters brought them back to shore by 3 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Mokulehua said the boaters said they were coming in toward the naval side of the channel when a gust of wind pushed them off course and grounded them off the beach. He said the boaters planned to wait until high tide to try to remove the sailboat.

Christina Nasau was on the beach and noticed the boat because she saw all the people on board standing on one side, trying to keep the boat from tipping over to the Ewa side. She thought the boat’s engine must have gone out.

“They were struggling for some time,” she said, adding that the boat leaned so low, she thought it would take on water. She said someone called for help and firefighters arrived soon afterwards.
