Kamehameha storms back

A big game required a big effort from Alohi Robins-Hardy.

With senior point guard Tiare Kanoa sidelined, Robins-Hardy stepped up with 26 points and 11 rebounds in a 57-54 comeback win over ‘Iolani on Saturday at the Raiders’ gym.

No. 3 Kamehameha improved to 5-1 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play (10-2 overall) with a gritty defensive effort and clutch plays, particularly from the versatile Robins-Hardy.

The 6-foot-1 senior was fearless, swishing a step-back trey from 22 feet over Jade Botelho to give the Warriors a 55-54 lead with 20 seconds left.

"We just needed to take care of our side of the court, play defense and play our game," said Robins-Hardy, who was the Star-Advertiser girls volleyball player of the year. "It was there, so I was, all right. Our plan was to go inside."

No. 9 ‘Iolani pushed the ball upcourt on the ensuing possession, but opted to set up against the taller Warriors. Robins-Hardy then stole an entry pass and was fouled with 5.4 seconds to go. She hit both free throws for a 3-point lead.

"We didn’t want to foul. We had to make sure they didn’t go to the line," she said.

The Raiders (9-5, 2-2 ILH) had trouble getting a good look and Brooke Maeda was double-teamed as she launched a 40-foot prayer that missed at the buzzer.

Robins-Hardy couldn’t have played better. She shot 10-for-12 from the field,

4-for-5 from the foul line, dished two assists, and had two steals and one block.

Kanoe Marks-Mahoe added eight points, while forward Makana Aleki had six points, six boards and eight assists for coach Darold Imanaka’s squad.

Freshman Camy Aguinaldo hit a team-high three treys and slashed her way to 17 points for the Raiders. Botelho and Emily Nomura finished with 10 points each for coach Dean Young’s team. In all, the Raiders made nine of 20 3-point tries, but were just 3-for-10 from deep in the second half.

It was an uptempo game much of the time, with five lead changes in the first half. ‘Iolani was red hot from deep, shooting 6-for-10 from beyond the arc.

The home team opened the lead to 45-40 on a foul shot from Botelho to close the third quarter. After Botelho swished a 3-pointer for a 48-46 Raiders lead with five minutes to go, the Warriors seemed to be snakebit, missing short shots and throwing the ball away.

With just one team foul, Kamehameha started giving out fouls. The Raiders didn’t capitalize, shooting 1-for-3 from the line, including a missed 1-and-1 by Aguinaldo with 33 seconds remaining.

That set the stage for Robins-Hardy’s impeccable go-ahead trey. It was a solid team effort for the Warriors against ‘Iolani’s fullcourt pressure.

Kanoa, an All-State guard who suffered an injury against Maryknoll on Dec. 28, had surgery on Saturday to repair an ACL, Robins-Hardy said. She committed to Arizona State the week before the injury occurred.
