Kamehameha leaves Kealakehe reeling

Kamehameha quarterback Noah Sua-Godinet put together his most productive statistical performance of the young season Saturday night.

The Warriors defense continued to generate numbers that are just plain scary.

Sua-Godinet threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns and the defense posted its second shutout of the season in a 34-0 win over Kealakehe at Kunuiakea Stadium.

With Sua-Godinet adjusting to life as a varsity quarterback, the Warriors defense has done its part to take pressure off the sophomore. Kamehameha enters its ILH opener against Saint Louis without having surrendered a touchdown in three interleague games.

"Every week’s a new week. We’ll enjoy it for tonight, but come tomorrow we’re already focusing on Saint Louis," Kamehameha defensive end Mika Tafua said. "This is the past; we have to focus on the future."

Tafua had five tackles for loss in the first half and Kamehameha dropped Kealakehe ballcarriers behind the line of scrimmage a total of 20 times in the game while holding the visiting Waveriders to 80 yards in total offense, including negative 16 on the ground.

Kamehameha had allowed a total of 6 yards in total offense in interleague wins over Castle and Farrington. The Warriors held Castle to a rushing total of minus-113 yards, then limited Farrington to 69 total yards.

"We all work together," Tafua said. "(Defensive tackles) Kaau (Gifford) and Kalei (Meyer) in the middle get the penetration and we benefit from them. When we get off the edge, they benefit from us, and we’re trusting our DBs and linebackers to make plays and everyone’s getting to the ball."

Sua-Godinet had spent most of the first two games handing the ball off to running back Brandon Kahookele, who picked up 56 yards and a touchdown in his 13 carries.

First-year head coach Doug Cosbie gave Sua-Godinet more opportunities to throw the ball on Saturday and the sophomore completed 12 of 19 passes, connecting with William Young on touchdown tosses of 29 and 26 yards, and ran for a score.

"We’re trying to give him a little bit more each week, trying to bring him along slowly," Cosbie said. "He’s really talented, but he’s very inexperienced and he’s been a quarterback for about 10, 11 weeks now. He’s a really good athlete, really good competitor and he’s improving every week and we have to keep working hard and getting better."
