Not a lot has gone right for the Campbell Sabers since the start of last season.

The one place that has brought success is all the way out east at Kaiser Stadium.

The Sabers returned to the site of their 2015 playoff win over Kaiser — one of two Campbell victories all year — and picked up their first win of this season with a 28-7 victory over the Cougars on Friday night.

Kawika Ulufale accounted for three first-half touchdowns and Fangaima Mailei finished with 102 yards receiving for a balanced Campbell offense.

Ulufale finished 23-for-32 for 180 yards passing, while the Sabers (1-2, 1-1 OIA Blue) rolled up 219 yards on the ground.

“We just wanted to get this ‘W,’” said Ulufale, who scored on a 20-yard run in the second quarter. “We were kind of slow in the first quarter, but we stepped it up after that.”

Tasi Faumui, who has started every game at running back for the Sabers, rushed for a team-high 83 yards on 16 carries. Darius Cambe, who played in his first game after injuring his ankle in a scrimmage against Saint Louis, added 73 yards on 12 carries and scored the only touchdown of the second half on a 2-yard run.

“Part of our plan tonight was to try to really get our running game going,” Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said. “We think we have a pretty good line and our strength this year needs to be to run the ball.”

Ulufale’s touchdown run early in the second quarter, which came on fourth-and-10, seemed to energize the Sabers sideline.

Campbell took the ball 80 yards on their next drive, with Faumui’s 32-yard run the big play. That set up a 10-yard touchdown pass from Ulufale to a leaping Markus Ramos in the corner of the end zone for a 14-0 lead.

Kaiser (1-2, 0-2), which only suited up 28 players, lost quarterback Kainoa Torres, who hobbled off the field early in the second quarter.

Teammate Shaun Kim temporarily lifted the Cougars’ spirits when he returned a kickoff 71 yards for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 14-7.

Kaiser couldn’t hold the momentum for long. The Cougars jumped offsides on a fourth-and-1 in Campbell territory to give up a first down. On the next play, Ulufale threw a quick pass out to receiver Mailei, who turned it upfield for a 56-yard touchdown and a 21-7 lead.

“Kaiser is a tough team that doesn’t have a lot of numbers, but they played their hearts out and made it tough on us,” Amosa said. “We’re still making too many mistakes with the penalties, but we kind of settled down finally.”

Lincoln Lima replaced Torres at quarterback and was 6-for-16 for 96 yards. Defensive lineman Andrew Choi had four tackles for loss and two sacks among his eight tackles for the Cougars defense.

Konawaena 23, St. Francis 22

The Wildcats won their season opener by holding off the Saints at Leilehua.

Konawaena (1-0) intercepted a St. Francis pass to start the fourth quarter and quickly capitalized on the turnover. A minute later, Micah Laban’s 9-yard score tied the game at 22. Harry Hill’s PAT gave the Wildcats a 23-22 lead with 10:45 left in the game.

Konawaena quarterback Austin Ewing completed 30 of 53 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw five interceptions.

St. Francis’ Wembley Mailei hauled in one of those interceptions for a touchdown. Mailei put the Saints (1-1) ahead 22-16 with 6:08 left in the third quarter on a 3-yard score.

Kalaheo 28, McKinley 14

The Mustangs survived the Tigers behind their aerial attack, highlighted by four touchdown passes.

Quarterback Mark Lehrner passed for three touchdowns and 135 yards, while Tristan Thulin-Marsh hauled in two touchdowns on six receptions for 136 yards.

The Tigers relied heavily on their running game, having thrown only five times. The Tigers gained 138 yards on 37 carries as a team.
