UC San Diego will petition to join Big West
The University of California San Diego will petition the Big West for membership after its undergraduate student body voted to approve an increase in student fees to cover the costs associated with a non-football Division I athletics program.
UCSD said the week-long vote was 6,137 in favor and 2,567 against with 124 abstentions.
Most of the University of Hawaii’s 21 teams compete in the Big West.
UCSD, whose 23 teams are currently classified Division II, said in a statement, “The student vote was a key milestone in what will be an ongoing process to get UC San Diego athletics to the Division I level. Included in that process will be securing an invitation for membership into the nine-team Big West Conference which currently includes four UC members—Santa Barbara, Irvine, Davis and Riverside—as well as taking additional steps, including review by the Academic Senate, prior to officially submitting an application for NCAA Division I. Other Big West schools include Cal Poly, Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge and Hawaii.”
UCSD students currently pay $129.38 per quarter in athletic fees, a figure that will rise to $289.38 over three years if the Big West accepts the Tritons.

Surprising considering that the undergraduates will increase their own tuition. But they can say with a little more pride that they graduated from a division 1 school.
Division I relates to sports programs not academic standing. UCSD is considered a top tier university since it is in the University of California system – same as UCLA, UC Berkeley, etc.
True it is a sports declaration, but being part of a bigger conference means more money for the school via tv and conference affiliation.
Got it!
Not to down grade Division II or III schools. Any college graduate should should be proud to graduate. Kudos any all college graduates!
Agree.
As a Hawaii alumn who was born and resides in San Diego, I’m excited about watching Wahine and Warrior teams in San Diego. Especially Wahine Volleyball and Warrior Baseball.
Looking forward to seeing Hawaii Football Nation come to San Diego in November when
Hawaii plays SDSU on Saturday, and the return of St. Louis’ Favorite Son comes to the west coach to play the Chargers on Sunday. What a Great Weekend for Hawaii Fans.

Love that name , Bookem!
Love the San Diego area. This will give my family more opportunity to travel with UH to visit the City.
I hope they get in. A great addition. They have a very robust athletic program with 23 sports.
