Hilo tops Manoa 1-0 in battle of UH baseball teams

HILO >> Jordan Kurokawa tossed a two-hit shutout and Hawaii Hilo stunned Hawaii 1-0 tonight in the season opener for both teams at Wong Stadium.

Kurokawa struck out seven and retired the final 12 batters to get the win for the Vulcans (1-0), who have won fewer than 15 games in each of the past four seasons.

Jonathan Segovia broke a scoreless tie with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Edison Sakata, who led off with a single.

Hawaii starter Brendan Hornung allowed eight hits in 6 2/3 innings with two walks and three strikeouts.

Hawaii lost its fourth straight opener, while UH Hilo beat Hawaii for only the 21st time in 129 all-time meetings.

The two teams played against each other for the first time since 2008. They will face off again at 1 p.m. Sunday.

UH Manoa seems to be getting beat in all kinds of sports. Now, Hilo beats Manoa in baseball. The athletic budget needs to be reduced, not increased!

Don’t short change Hilo. Kurokawa is legit. The kid can play. Hopefully he will get a chance at the next level.

Long seasons ahead for both programs but its nice to see little brother beat big bro. The only question is how did UH not see this guy Kurokawa coming out of high school? Maybe UH needs to start putting more stock in their recruits potential as many of our players have peaked early and have little in their tanks once their UH careers start. This comment applies to UH football too.

I have seen the kid throw the past three years and he has gotten better each year. This past summer he was the outstanding pitcher in the California league he played in. He has good size, picked up his velocity and has an unorthodox delivery which gives batters a different look.
