The No. 9-ranked Mid-Pacific Owls ran up a big lead and held on to eke past No. 1-ranked Punahou 56-54 in an ILH boys basketball opener at Mid-Pacific’s Mills Gym.
MPI led 30-19 at halftime and 46-34 heading into the fourth period before Punahou came storming back to tie it at 46.
But senior Justin Daise, who scored a game-high 26 points, scored eight points down the stretch — all inside the four-minute mark — and Zion Shepherd got two big steals and scored off the latter for a 56-49 lead with 24.3 seconds left. Punahou sophomore Zayne Chong hit a corner 3 while falling out of bounds to make it 56-52 with 23 seconds left.
Punahou closed it to 56-54 and Mid-Pacific missed one-and-one free-throw attempts with 21 and 6.7 seconds left, giving the Buffanblu life. A desperation 3 with 0.5 left was short and the Owls came away with a rare season-opening win.
“This game was real special, not only for the coaches but for the players as well because we never got that first W in our opening ILH season,” Daise said. “No one believed in us. So that’s why we came out hungry.”
Said MPI coach Ryan Hirata: “The ILH opener at your own gym, you can’t get a better atmosphere than that. And our guys were very, very hungry to go out there and play their hearts out and they left it on the floor tonight.”

Daniel Florenco added 13 points and Jacen Kimura nine for the Owls, who took the lead on Kimura’s 3-pointer with 3:27 left in the first period and kept building on it. The Owls led 14-6 at the end of the first, 30-19 at halftime and 46-34 entering the final period. But Punahou came back, behind many of its 3-point marksmen.
Senior Jared Lum scored on a putback to start the rally and sophomore Cole Mausolf capped the 12-0 run by hitting consecutive 3-pointers to tie the game at 46 with 3:59 left.
Daise scored on a banker and completed the and-one with a free throw for a 49-46 lead. However, Chong hit a 3-pointer to tie it. After sophomore Cole Arceneaux missed two free throws, Daise hit a free throw with 1:56 left and then scored on a putback with 1:38 left for a 52-49 lead. Daise hit two more free throws for a 54-49 lead and Shepherd scored a layup off his steal to make it 56-49.
Daise said the “game plan going in was to stop their No. 1 player and that’s Chris Kobayashi. I felt we did a good thing with that. We held him to like 2 points. but overall, it was just to come out and be hungry.
“We just wanted to contain their shooters,” Hirata said. “We know that they’re great shooters, especially Chris Kobayashi. He’s been really hot as of late coming into the season, so we just wanted to make sure that we contained their guys as much as possible. That’s all you can do is contain them. They’re gonna shoot the ball well when they came out with that huge run and we were lucky enough to hold on.”
