It wasn’t exactly the Mid-Pacific way, but coach Dunn Muramaru will take a victory any way his Owls can get it these days.
Usually, the boys from Manoa do it with pitching, defense and timely hitting. On Saturday, it was a healthy dose of power hitting for fourth-ranked MPI, which stayed afloat due to nine ‘Iolani errors on the way to an 18-8 rout of the host Raiders.
Giving up eight runs, even in a win, can grate on baseball traditionalists.
“A win is a win and we’ll take anything right now,” said Muramaru, who watched as the Owls (4-3) failed to close out the 10th-ranked Raiders on the 10-run mercy rule despite a 12-0 second-inning lead. “It is what it is. He (starting pitcher Chase Wago) got the pitches up, that’s all. Just gotta keep the ball down. We’ve been scoring runs lately and that’s great, and we’re not making errors. ‘Iolani is a good hitting team.”
Trevin Tengan’s two-run triple and Hunter Hill’s two-run double keyed Mid-Pacific’s six-run first inning off of ‘Iolani starter Trevor Ichimura. Cameron Wong, Zach Gushiken, Jarrod Infante and Jacob Maekawa hit run-scoring singles in the second, and two ‘Iolani errors helped boost the Owls’ lead to 12-0.
After going down easy in the first two frames, ‘Iolani (2-5) showed a bit of life in the third. Everett Lau, who hit two homers against Mid-Pacific in a 9-6 loss on Wednesday, bashed a run-scoring double to center, and three batters later, Landen Moran cranked a two-run double to right to make it 12-3.
Lau and Moran finished with two doubles.
“We finally got Lau out, twice,” said Muramaru, referring to a strikeout and a flyout in the ‘Iolani senior’s other two at-bats.
The Raiders’ Matt Campos drove in two runs with a double in the fourth to spark a three-run inning, and, in the fifth, Moran doubled and eventually scored on a double play to get ‘Iolani as close as 12-7.
“We lost the first two innings and won the last five, that’s a positive,” ‘Iolani coach Kurt Miyahira said. “Bottom line, I’m doing a terrible job as a coach right now. These guys are giving everything they’ve got.”
With six errors in the last two innings combined, the Raiders allowed six more runs and only got one back on Kaimana Bartolome’s RBI double in the sixth.
Wago, a left-hander, was the winning pitcher, going six full innings and giving up eight runs on 11 hits with seven strikeouts.
Reliever Daniel Nishihara finished up the final inning of one-hit ball with two strikeouts.
“I felt like I was messing up and they made me pay for my mistakes,” Wago said about his so-so performance. “They were doing a great job of hitting. Every team in the ILH can hit. They’re not going to give up and roll over. I just gotta keep fighting and keep the pitches down, like Coach said.”
Ichimura, the first of four Raiders pitchers, took the loss. Reliever Jordan Iwasaki was effective in slowing the Mid-Pacific bats, allowing one hit in 31⁄3 innings. Brandon Yanagi chipped in with one hitless inning.
“Next game, maybe eight errors, then after that seven, six, five, four, three, two, one,” Miyahira said. “We should see some improvement there.”
