After three straight losses to state and national powerhouses, Saint Louis emphatically gave Cal Lee his first win in his return as the Crusaders’ head coach.
No. 8 Saint Louis (1-3, 1-1 ILH Division I) took it out on Pac-Five with a 60-13 rout at Aloha Stadium on Friday night.
Sophomore quarterback Tua Tagavailoa spearheaded the efficient Crusaders attack, completing 21 of 26 passes for 440 yards and four touchdowns.
"We still have a lot to work on," Lee said. "But it always feels good and it’s got to be refreshing for the kids after getting run over against three really good teams."
Pac-Five moved the ball all night on Saint Louis, but could not punch it home in the first half. Twice in the first 24 minutes, Pac-Five failed to put points on the board when two Riley Asuncion field goals failed.
Kainoa Ferreira, who has been a passing yardage machine all season so far for the Wolfpack, attempted 53 passes in the first half alone. He finished 30-for-65 for 311 yards. His main receiver, Tsubasa Brennan, made 14 receptions for 119 yards.
But Saint Louis’ defense held steady to hand Pac-Five (2-1, 1-1 ILH Division II) its first loss of the season. The Crusaders’ defensive backs never gave up the long ball in the first half and contributed to the onslaught on the last play before the break, when Jedadiah Lulu intercepted a Ferreira pass and returned it 70 yards for a 46-0 lead.
Pac-Five got on the board, finally, in the third quarter with Ferreira touchdown passes of 21 yards to Sean Kinel and 19 to Brennan.
Tagavailoa was on target all night, especially on the deep ball. Nine of his completions were of 20 yards or more, including TD strikes of 32 yards to Jordan Goo, 46 to Keanu Souza and 64 to Drew Kobayashi.
"We had a great week of practice, going over all of the mistakes we were making," Tagavailoa said. "We worked on perfecting things with (offensive coordinator) Coach Ron (Lee) and the staff. With this win, we think we can go onwards and upwards from here."
Before the season started, Lee hadn’t coached Saint Louis since 2001.

The Buffanblu proved to be too much for the Monarchs (1-2, 0-2 ILH), from beginning to end.
With first-string quarterback Ephraim Tuliloa out sick with a fever, backup Nicholas Kapule took over and threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns to lead the way for Punahou in the first game of a doubleheader at Aloha Stadium.
"We’re never satisfied, but we are totally pleased with the way our kids played their hearts out," Punahou defensive coordinator Agenhart Ellis III said.
The Buffanblu (2-0, 2-0) scored on their first four possessions, including Kapule’s 39-yard TD pass to Micah Ma’a.
Kanawai Noa, perhaps the most dangerous receiving threat in the state, caught two passes for 36 yards, but he also had a swervy, 66-yard punt return for a score.
Damien tight end King Kapiinaokala beat double coverage in the end zone for the Monarchs’ only TD on a 13-yard toss from Dallas Labanon.
Kapule was intercepted twice by Damien’s Jarin Manuel. The picks were Kapule’s only incompletions out of his 12 pass attempts.
"I’m happy with way we came out and battled the No. 1 team in the state," Monarchs coach Eddie Klaneski said. "They’re No. 1 for a reason."
