Impact plays on special teams often highlighted Dick Tomey’s tenure leading the Rainbow Warrior football program.
The task of coordinating that aspect of the game now belongs to his son-in-law, Mayur Chaudhari, who joined the UH coaching staff this week as special teams coordinator.
“I want them to produce and be able to play fast and be physical and play confident,” Chaudhari said. “If I do my job right, on Saturday we’re colleagues and we’re working together on the sideline, me and the players.”
Chaudhari spent the last two seasons at Lenoir-Rhyne University and his previous stops included Army, Virginia Military Institute and San Jose State, where he worked for Tomey.
He eventually married Tomey’s daughter, Leigh, and had been a regular visitor to the islands before being hired by first-year head coach Nick Rolovich to lead the UH special teams units.
“That adds extra emotion to it,” Chaudhari said of the connection to the program. “it’s exciting and I’m happy for it.”
Chaudhari replaces Jake Cookus, who was initially retained by Rolovich but was recently hired by Oregon State as quality control analyst. Rolovich leads the Warriors into his first spring practice on March 29.
