A 65-year-old Kihei man died Wednesday afternoon when the truck he was driving drifted off Mokulele Highway on Maui and hit a concrete bridge abutment.
Maui police said Dennis Witt was not wearing his seat belt when the crash occurred. Witt was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:39 p.m., police said, and the cause of death is pending an autopsy.
The accident occurred on Mokulele Highway, 0.7 mile south of Mehameha Loop in Kihei.
Witt was driving a white 2004 Ford Ranger pickup truck, traveling north on Mokulele Highway when it drifted off the roadway onto the east shoulder and struck the abutment.
There were no passengers in the truck.
The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol is under investigation, police said.
The accident marks Maui County’s ninth traffic fatality in 2016 as compared with 13 this time last year.
Man who died in Napili Bay incident ID’d
Maui police have identified the 47-year-old California visitor who died after being found unconscious in the waters of Napili Bay as James Guanga.
Guanga was found floating in Napili Bay at 12:17 p.m. Monday.
He was brought to shore, and beachgoers and emergency personnel administered CPR and lifesaving measures. Guanga died in the ambulance on his way to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
