Forecasters expect as many as 7 big storms to approach isles

The Climate Prediction Center is forecasting above-normal rainfall during the latter half of this hurricane season, affecting mostly windward slopes, said Kevin Kodama, National Weather Service senior hydrologist. As for leeward areas, Kodama said the current drought is likely to expand into new areas, leading to even worse conditions than those that gave rise to this year’s exceptionally active brush fire season.

“There are conflicting signals for the upcoming season, giving us a little more uncertainty in what 2016 has in store for us,” said Chris Brenchley, warning coordination meteorologist of the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.
