Alala! Hawaiian crow is one smart bird

A study published Thursday in the journal Nature reveals that the alala is a “remarkable” and “dexterous” user of tools — an ability found in only a handful of other bird species and in less than 1 percent of all animals.

A study published Thursday in Nature says the alala and the New Caledonian crow, another tool-using bird, while only distantly related, both evolved independently on remote tropical islands where conditions may have allowed for the development of tool use.
