A scaled-back City Council bill to rein in ride-hailing operations such as Uber and Lyft deserves a serious look when a final vote by the full Council is taken Aug. 3.

The Council must consider the merits of expanding third-party background checks for taxicab and ride-hailing drivers that would go back seven years.

It was a wise move to defer an earlier bill that would have required Uber and Lyft cars to be equipped with dome lights and taximeters.

That measure also would have banned the use of GPS to calculate distance and determine fares — which is a main feature of Uber and Lyft.

The companies are still opposed to the new bill, and Uber said it might bolt if it’s passed.

We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Hurricane season means be ready

This year’s hurricane season is supposed to be less active than 2015, when 15 tropical cyclones marched across the Central Pacific.

But as we know, it only takes one.

As of yesterday, a robust tropical storm Darby was headed toward the Hawaiian islands, triggering warnings of high surf, heavy rains, high winds and possible flooding for Hawaii island and Maui.

We all know the drill — batten down the hatches, and keep emergency supplies on hand.

Hurricane season lasts from June through November. So keep a weather eye out.
