When I step outdoors, I can count on a big problem I don’t look forward to facing in busy Honolulu.
I definitely will breathe the lingering urine odors at bus stops. No one at a bus stop is happy with this constant sickening experience.
What happened to the idea of turning shipping containers and large vehicles into restrooms, locating them at strategic spots, and giving the homeless jobs to keep them clean?
Evidence shows the idea works in other big cities. It’s not a far-fetched solution when we know our mayor has the funds to deal with a homeless issue that affects all of us.
Hawaii vies for the award of being the healthiest state. We can make our aloha even more genuine by cleaning up our city, making it inviting to visitors and all of us who live and love the outdoors.

GOP debates certainly have degenerated
In high school, my son participated in Lincoln-Douglas debates, a one-on-one debate style modeled on the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858.
Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas engaged in soaring oratory to discuss the issues of the day, especially slavery and states’ rights.
Compare those debates to today’s political rhetoric among Republican candidates. Lincoln must be rolling in his grave.

It’s scary that it might be Clinton vs. Trump
I was just wondering how we got to this point, where the next president of the United States will likely be Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton.
I’m just your average citizen who’s not really into politics, but I cannot be the only one who is concerned, worried or frightened.

Gabbard did what she believes is right
Regarding Jim Frisbie’s comment about U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, “How is this good for Hawaii?” (“Gabbard’s move harmful to Hawaii?” Star-Advertiser, Letters, March 3):
When you vote for an elected official, you should be voting for the person who tells you what she believes in, not for someone who promises the impossible.
Gabbard did tell us her personal feelings about many issues facing the state of Hawaii, as well as for this country.
Gabbard resigned as Democratic Party vice-chair because she believes in more than what is popular.
For that, I thank her.
You should, too.

How you lose says much about character
The University of Hawaii lost on Feb. 25, and I’m not talking about the basketball game.
I’m talking about the poor sportsmanship, bad behavior, lost composure and lack of leadership (“Big West reprimands UH guard Bobbitt for ‘unsporting behavior’ against UC Riverside,” Star-Advertiser, Breaking News, Feb. 26).
I was upset that UH lost the game but more upset at how the UH players lost. The players and the coaches have to realize they represent Hawaii. We in Hawaii don’t trash talk, we don’t try to pick fights, we don’t cry and bad mouth the other team.
I attended UH when the Fab Five played. I can’t remember that team ever behaving badly. They represented Hawaii like they lived here all their lives.
This team does not represent the values of Hawaii.
The coaches have to teach about life, not just how to dribble and shoot.
