Fire destroys Haiku house, displaces family of 5
Fire destroyed a house, displacing a family of five early today in Haiku, Maui firefighters said.
The fire erupted about 2:20 a.m. on Kauhikoa Road and engulfed a 1,100-square-foot single-story home before firefighters arrived, said Maui Fire Department spokesman Edward Taomoto.
Eighteen firefighters contained the fire about half an hour later and extinguished it by 7:03 a.m.
Two adults and two young children were home asleep when the fire started and they made it out of the home unharmed.
Firefighters said the fire started in the carport, but the cause was undetermined. Damage was estimated at $295,000 to the home and its contents. The fire also destroyed two cars and a shuttle bus and damaged two cars, all parked nearby, causing another $11,500 in damage.
The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
