3 missing after overturned boat spotted 25 miles off Haleiwa

The Coast Guard, Navy and Honolulu Fire Department are searching for three missing fishermen after their 20-foot fishing vessel, Iwa, was spotted overturned by the Coast Guard approximately 25 miles off Haleiwa Boat Harbor.
The U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy and Honolulu Fire Department are searching for three men whose overturned fishing boat was spotted about 25 miles off Haleiwa Boat Harbor.
The Coast Guard said Jensen Loo, Clint Oshima and Derek Tomas, all 30 years old, were on the 20-foot fishing boat Iwa, which left Haleiwa Sunday morning and failed to return as planned by 5 p.m.
A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, HC-130 Hercules plane and the USCGC Kiska, along with a Navy P-3 Orion and Honolulu Fire Department crews are searching for the missing men.
Crews reported 15 to 25 mph winds but good visibility in the search area.

Terrible mishap, and my heart goes out to them and their families. However, there WAS a small craft advisory posted yesterday. Tradewinds were kicked up which automatically means the North Shore is absolutely no place for a little 20′ open motorboat with a single outboard to be fishing in.
God protect their souls.
Hope they are found safe and returned home.
Hope they were wearing floatation vests and have vhs marine band radio as well as epirb….

Is a 20-foot boat 25 miles out at sea normal? 15 to 25 mile wind and 8 foot waves? I wouldn’t even surf in those conditions.
Yes lets all say a prayer for the 3 men. Having fished in Hawaii’s waters for over 40 years, it is now uncommon to find smaller boats out as far as 30+ miles chasing Ahi ( Yellowfin tuna)
in the summer seasons. I personally had an engine shut down on an 18 foot boat in 1989 and drifted for 1 1/2 days before a rain squall saved us and Capt Bran Vanderstock (coast guard auxiliary) found us & saved us. Its a big ocean and lots can happen fast. Again prayers for a safe recovery are in order.
