2 tropical storms form in East Pacific; Blas could become a hurricane
The first and second named tropical storms of the Eastern Pacific hurricane season formed this weekend and are taking different paths near Mexico.
The National Hurricane Center said Tropical Storm Agatha formed Saturday but is starting weaken as it moves west-northwest over cooler waters at 12 mph. The storm was about 1,080 miles west-southwest of Baja, Calif., with sustained winds of 40 mph, this evening.
Farther south, Tropical Storm Blas is strengthening quickly and is expected to become a hurricane overnight or on Monday. It could reach major hurricane status before weakening by the weekend.
This evening, Blas had sustained winds of 65 mph and was about 740 miles south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. The storm was moving west-northwest at 12 mph.
Neither storm is a threat to land at this point. The storms are too far away to say if they will affect Hawaii’s weather.
