The Zoo Management, should learn to run the Zoo, like a Business, and not a Non-Profit Agency, that seeks funding every year, just to survive.

  2. Bdpapa says:

$16 is too much! Maybe $8 for adults and children under 12 $2.

    Close it. Stop the suffering.

Agree, Close the Zoo and use the space to enlarge Kapiolani Park. Cheaper and better use of the land.
Zoos are a relic of the 19th century just like the Circus and SeaWorld type shows. It did serve a purpose once but at a huge cost to the captive animals and maintenance costs.
I have never been a fan of Zoos or aquariums for that matter.

Totally agree. I’m against keeping wild animals in cages. Send these poor animals to sanctuaries and close the zoo. There is better use for the space.

Our public officials better think this one out, before sticking it to the Tourist. We want them to come back again! Right? With all the escalating prices that target and rip-off Hawaii Visitors is Shameful!

    • EOD9 says:

Caldwell said tourist pay for 30% of the rail so why not make them pay for the zoo as well? Just add a line item to their hotel bill right under the rail fee and then it’ll make collecting the fee much easier. Doesn’t matter if they go to the zoo or ride the rail, they’ll pay for it whether they like it or not. Keep sticking it to the tourist while visitor numbers are high.

STOP fabricating MORE reasons for MORE taxation.

  6. dkuranag says:

Didn’t we just vote for permanent funding for the zoo? So why raise fees? Why does our zoo have so many issues? How about we send the zoo back to parks and get rid of DES. Let them stick to running the Blaisdell.

The proper way to address this question is with a pricing sensitivity study. Also the pricing needs to be correlated with the expenses. Your question today is like pinning a tail on a donkey.

Hon. Zoo and Hon. Zoo Society need to stop fighting or disagreeing or whatever is going on. I’ve tried for 2 yrs now to schedule our annual field trip to the zoo for our pet group and each time, both groups refuse to help and refer me back and forth. You’d think they live in different countries. Hello, aren’t you both on the same page?? When I mentioned this to a certain tv station reporter, the response was that this dispute is well-known and has been going on for a long time. Don’t expect any re-accreditation til you solve this!

I just went to the Honolulu Zoo in December and it is terrible. Exhibits are run down, the up keep of the property is terrible. Shut it down as it is a terrible eye sore.

  10. MusicLover says:

We don’t need a zoo at all! Like the person below stated, last time I went to the zoo it was free.
If you insist having a zoo, then make the visitor pay double, triple, etc., and let the Hawaii Residents in for free.

We have the Waikiki Aquarium, etc., more native species.
Why do we need lions and elephants???

Use the land for something such as a new beautiful and acoustically outstanding building for the symphony and increase parking (without raising the parking fee!).
There seems to be money for everything, we definitely can do without a zoo that is always in trouble.

You need to create an actual zoo before you can ask for increases.
