Tourist friendly and not local friendly.
It’s not even tourist friendly. A friend staying there got a discount to $30.00 a day for his rental car parking at his nearly $300.00 a night hotel. Screw Waikiki.
That is how it is for most tourist city. San Francisco, New York City, Baltimore, etc all charge for hotel parking. It sucks but Waikiki is not an exception but the norm.
NYC still has a lot of free parking.
Parking is the main reason why I avoid that area at all costs. Instead of building more hotels, they need to build more parking structures there that are affordable to park at.
It’s just like NYC. It is what it is. If you can’t handle the hassle than you are not that interested to begin with.
Worked there for forty years, could usually find some parking. But now, 10 years later, its horrible.
I go into Waikiki once a week generally for my Rotary meeting. We have parking at the hotel but if it wasn’t for the parking, I don’t think I would go. Relatively easy to get there but driving in Waikiki is not fun.
Parking is not just a challenge in Waikiki. Many of our popular parks full up early. We need much better planning and governmental support from elected officials at both the State and County levels and dare I say … working together! The HVCB/HTA [Hawaii Tourism Association and the Hawaii Transportation Association] need to step our of their cozy comfort zones and make some waves. Traffic on the roads and parked off of roads are quality of life issues affecting many people on Oahu. Caldwell is trending us in a negative direction.
Now with the determination of some to take away the little bit of free parking sites in Waikiki, the local community (again, again, AGAIN!) is being shoved aside.
I’d love it if folks in positions of power would pause to remember that, while encouraging tourism, we still need to focus on the needs, and quality of life, of folks who live here year after year.
That happens less and less, with regrettable long-term effect.
“No sweat” – because they don’t drive.
Yup, just build 30 story parking structures that block out the sun and charge $15 an hour for the spaces. West side will someday be like Waikiki. Our politicians will see to it.
Turn the zoo into a parking garage. HNL does NOT need a zoo to showcase pathetic, caged animals.
