It is a Hollywood cartoon. For many other Hawaiians, it did not cross the threshold, of cultural insults.
Not all of the actors, are Hawaiian either. Is that a big deal ?
This is not an important, Hawaiian Cultural Issue.

The savages stereotype has been a problem since the missionary days. This controversy is sort of like the debate about mascots dressing up as an American Indian in full wardress and entertaining crowds at sporting events, pretty much demeaning their cultural heritage in the process.

I understand the up roar with the Washington Redskins and the term is derogatory. Many college mascots have changed. UH had Vili the Warrior. Not sure why he he wasn’t retained. Possibly contract issues.
Moana is a animated film about our more popular folk tales. If the costume is not culturally sensitive, then maybe the film too? I haven’t seen or heard too much about the film being on the hot seat.
Maybe, Hollywood should just not make any films about Hawaii or Hawaiians for fear of stepping on some sensitive toes.
