Hawaii County police have opened up a coroner’s inquest after the discovery of skeletal remains in Kailua-Kona Tuesday.

A construction worker unearthed what appeared to be human bones Tuesday at an unimproved lot on Alii Drive.

The worker stopped work, and police were called and responded at about 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Detectives responded and continued the investigation. They found more bones Wednesday and recovered personal items from the scene, police said.

Detectives are trying to follow up on leads to find the identity of the person.
