Hawaii basketball team routs D-II Humboldt State
The Hawaii men’s basketball team used a decisive first-half run to put away Division II Humboldt State in a 90-54 laugher tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.
UH (2-0) went on a 20-0 run spanning five minutes to take a 33-11 lead and remove whatever small amount of drama existed on the second day of the Outrigger Rainbow Classic. The lead was 47-21 at halftime and grew to as many as 38 points late.
Guard Eddie Stansberry and forward Jack Purchase each hit five 3-pointers to combine for 31 points and all of the team’s long balls. Point guard Brocke Stepteau added 13 points and center Mate Colina put in a season-high 10. Forward Zigmars Raimo grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds.
Freshman Justin Hemsley scored his first nine career points in garbage time.
Jackson Strong led the Lumberjacks with 13 points.
The Rainbow Warriors face North Texas (3-0) for the Rainbow Classic championship at 6 p.m. Sunday. The Mean Green defeated Portland 78-73 before UH’s game today.
