A 50-year-old man has died after he fell approximately 30 feet into a rocky shoreline from a cliff at Keaau.
Positive identification is pending.
Firefighters responded to a report of a man who fell off the cliff located off of Beach Road at the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday.
The man’s friends told firefighters that they were hanging out near the shoreline. The man was reportedly intoxicated when he stumbled and fell off the cliff, according to Battalion Chief Matthias Kusch.
Firefighters arrived and searched for the victim. At one point, they briefly saw the body but lost sight of him due to the high surf. Kusch said they were forced to suspend efforts to recover the victim Sunday night because of dangerous ocean conditions.
The Hawaii County Fire Department launched its helicopter, boat and shore team this morning to search for the man’s body.
