A state judge sentenced former Honolulu police officer Travis E. Copeland to four years of probation Wednesday for insurance fraud.

Circuit Judge Colette Garibaldi also ordered Copeland to repay his home insurer $4,796 and to pay $4,000 into a state fund for crime victims. As part of his plea agreement with the state Attorney General, Copeland was required to immediately pay at least $4,000 of the money he owes. Garibaldi ordered him to pay whatever is left at a rate of $500 per month.

Copeland no longer lives in Hawaii.

The attorney general agreed to transfer Copeland’s case and allow him to serve his probation in Texas.

Copeland, 35, pleaded guilty in June to two counts of insurance fraud.

The state’s Insurance Division said Copeland staged a burglary of his Pearl City home, then made an insurance claim for items he said were stolen — electronics, cash, liquor and jewelry, including engagement and wedding rings.

Copeland also reported that his vehicle, a Mercedes-­Benz, was stolen in the burglary. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the vehicle burning nearby.

Before his car insurer paid out $13,393 on his claim, Copeland admitted staging the burglary and destroying his vehicle.

The Honolulu Police Department says Copeland had 10 years of service at the time of his discharge in March.
