Dog dies in Kapolei fire that damaged home

Honolulu firefighters extinguished a fire that charred a home in Kapolei and killed a dog early Tuesday.

Ten units with 35 firefighters responded to the fire at a town-home at the Senior Residence in Kapolei, 91-1058 Namahoe St. just before 2:30 a.m.

Fire crews arrived to find flames coming from the front of the residence.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control within 20 minutes and extinguished it at 3:30 a.m., said Honolulu Fire Capt. Scot Seguirant.

Three occupants — a woman and two men — were home at the time of the fire. They safely escaped the home, as did one dog. But a second dog perished.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and the American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.

Police search for suspect after crash

Police continued well after sunset looking for an auto theft suspect who fled after the pickup truck he was driving flipped multiple times and crashed Tuesday afternoon on Kahekili Highway near the Hui Iwa Street side dip.

Honolulu Police Department Deputy Chief John McCarthy said that a first-degree terroristic threatening case began in District 2, which covers Wahiawa and the North Shore and ended up in the Temple Valley area.

The suspect fled on foot after the truck flipped over multiple times.

The Specialized Services Division conducted a search for the suspect, McCarthy said.

A video of the incident was caught on a dash camera and posted by KHON-TV. The dramatic scene on a crowded highway during afternoon rush hour traffic showed the truck apparently speeding, flipping over multiple times and mowing down two light posts.

Traffic on Kahekili was contra-flowed. The highway was back open at around 9 p.m.
