Hooray for the lawsuit to stop “gut and replace” (“Groups sue to stop ‘gut and replace’ at Hawaii Legislature,” Star-Advertiser, Top News, Sept. 5).
For years, legislators have been violating their own rules with impunity, allowing routine closed-door discussion and decision- making. In my 12 years’ experience working at the Legislature, I have seen my boss, Republican Sen. Sam Slom, left alone on the Senate floor while Democrats withdrew from public debate to make deals and decide privately crucial aspects of public policy. This correction is long overdue.
