Ho leads after first day of qualifying
Hawaii’s Coco Ho leads after Thursday’s first round of qualifying for the inaugural Surf Ranch Pro in Lemoore, Calif.
Ho scored a 14.94, while fellow Hawaii surfer Bethany Hamilton is seventh with a 9.26. Malia Manuel, Carissa Moore and Tatiana Weston-Webb didn’t surf.
In the men’s competition, Hawaii’s Sebastian Zietz is ninth with a 12.67 and Keanu Asing is 11th with a 12.50. Ezekiel Lau didn’t surf. Event host Kelly Slater leads with a 14.57.
The qualifying round continues today. The competitors will catch six waves (3 rights, 3 lefts), with the top eight men and top four women advancing to the final round.
Basketball officials meeting Sept. 18
The Hawaii State Basketball Officials Association is inviting all individuals interested in refereeing high school games to attend a meeting Sept. 18 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Aloha Stadium hospitality room.

Individuals 18 years or older with no experience or those who wish to officiate youth and intermediate leagues are also encouraged to attend.
The association is a nonprofit organization that officiates Oahu Interscholastic Association boys and girls basketball games. All members must attend mandatory sessions in rules, mechanics and philosophy, as well as on-court situations.
